Giardiasis

Giardiasis is a parasitic infection associated with the intestine disease. It is caused by the Giardia lamblia. Giardiasis causes abdominal pain when someone consume contaminated food and and drinking contaminated water with giardia cyts. Giardiasis  spreads when a healthy person is in contact with infected people. Giardiasis is cured within a week, but intestinal problems may have stay for a long time. Giardia lamblia present in cyst form then it converted into trophozoites when enter into intestine. The size of a cyst falls between 8-19µm oval to ellipsoid in shape. The mature and immature cyst have 4 and 2 nuclei respectively.the trophozoites are in pear shape lies betweem 10-20µm in length and 5-15µm in width.

Giardia are present in the form of cyst in the contaminated water.if someone drinks this contaminated water it causes the giardiasis .After the giardia cysts swallows from the contaminated water it move to the intestine passes  through esophagus and stomach it develop into  trophozoites, this process is called excystation. These trophozoites get nutrition from the intestine. In the longitudinal binary fesion process, the giardia trophozoites spite in two trophozoites and rest of them attach to lining of small intestine to make stomach discomfort.

Giardia trophozoites move toward the colon and transform back into cyst form , this process is called  encystation. Giardia cyst commonly found in the stools while trophozoites are  not. Because most properly  trophozoites are not survive in the  enviroment. But most of time, both giardia cyst and trophozoites are found in the feces of infected people observed by microscope

Symptoms

  • fatigue
  • nausea
  • diarrhea or greasy stools
  • loss of appetite
  • vomiting
  • Bloating and abdominal cramps
  • weight loss

  • Eating contaminated food
  • Drinking from untreated water sources
  • Traveling to countries with poor sanitation practices.
  • Swallowing the parasite after touching a surface contaminated with giardia

Diagnosis

Microbiology Department

For the diagnosis of giardiasis, the healthcare provider must have to suggest to patient to examine the feces sample as a specimen under microscope.By using the microscopy examination with tricome staining to identified the giardia parasite or egg and cysts. After the examination of specimen  under the microscope the giardia cyst found in oval shape.
